چکیده

A full-wave analysis technique based on the finite element-boundary integral method is developed and used to rigorously treat the scattering from periodically structured metamaterials incorporating anisotropic liquid crystals LCs and dispersive materials. Reconfiguration of the negative-index metamaterials is achieved by controlling the magnetic resonance via tuning permittivity of the embedded anisotropic LCs. Numerical results show that the refractive index of the metamaterials can be reconfigured by tuning the director orientation of anisotropic LCs or by using temperature-dependent LCs. The design configurations and their characteristics in the nearand the mid-infrared ranges are presented. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2795345

Tunable fishnet metamaterials infiltrated by liquid crystals

We analyze numerically the optical response and effective macroscopic parameters of fishnet metamaterials infiltrated with a nematic liquid crystal. We show that even a small amount of liquid crystal can provide tuning of the structures due to reorientation of the liquid crystal director. This enables switchable optical metamaterials, where the refractive index can be switched from positive to ...

Liquid crystal clad near-infrared metamaterials with tunable negative-zero-positive refractive indices.

Near-infrared metamaterials that possess a reconfigurable index of refraction from negative through zero to positive values are presented. Reconfigurability is achieved by cladding thin layers of liquid crystal both as a superstrate and a substrate on an established negative-index metamaterial, and adjusting the permittivity of the liquid crystal. Numerical results show that the index of refrac...

Comparative Analysis of Split-ring Resonators for Tunable Negative Permeability Metamaterials Based on Anisotropic Dielectric Substrates

The magnetic resonance of various split ring resonators (SRRs) is numerically investigated to analyze the dependence of the resonance frequency on their parameter designs. The behavior of the magnetic resonance frequency in the configuration of the 2-cut singlering SRR (2C-SRR) shows a larger shift in relation to the changes of the SRR size scaling, split width and substrate permittivity. A new...

A large bistable negative lens by integrating a polarization switch with a passively anisotropic focusing element.

A bistable negative lens with a large aperture size (~10mm) by integrating a polarization switch of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) with a passively anisotropic focusing element is demonstrated. The proposed lens not only exhibits electrically tunable bistability but also fast response time of sub-milliseconds. The tunable lens power is from 0 to -1.74 Diopters. The electro-optical propert...

Towards Reconfigurable Optical Metamaterials: Colloidal Nanoparticle Self-Assembly and Self-Alignment in Liquid Crystals

We explore the nanoscale colloidal self-assembly and self-alignment in liquid crystals. We use model particles with controlled shapes and sizes, including quantum dots and rods and metal nanoparticles in the form of spheres, rods, and polygonal platelets. To study these composites on the scales ranging from nanometers to millimeters and to motivate their use in metamaterial fabrication, we util...
